Christmas: After our usual family Christmas at home we headed to Middle Tennessee for a Christmas party with my extended family. The theme of the party was "dress like your favorite Christmas movie character". Maybe you can figure out who I was!
A good time was had by all. The next day we headed to West Tennessee to spend time with Keith's family and then we headed to Tampa Florida for the Outback Bowl. Once again the Vols had a stellar bowl appearance.
We spent a few days in Tampa and enjoyed strolling on the River Walk and exploring the Big Cat Rescue.
After a couple of days in the sun, it was time to hit the road and head home. What a road trip. All told, we travelled 2300 miles! After a few days rest we were ready to head back to the mountain.
This year marks the 100 year anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and they are offering a special pin for 100 miles hiked during 2016. We decided to work towards that pin. We started our year off with a new trail called Roundtop. It's a lesser travelled trail, but off we went. Winter time hiking means colder temperatures, but fewer people on the trail. We pretty much had the trail to ourselves. With all the leaves off the trees we could see views that you can't see during the summer.
The next day was colder and the forecast included snow flurries, but that made us even more eager to hit the trail. There is something magical about walking through the woods on a snowy day. We chose Twin Creeks Trail which included a stop at the Bud Ogle Cabin. It was an awesome hike on a cold winter's day and a great start to our 2016 season!
