We decided to check out 'Anaeho'omalu Bay. Please don't ask me to pronounce that! And while I'm on the subject, we have been cracking up listening to the GPS "voice" pronouncing these Hawaiian street names! If you've ever watched Hawaii-50 you probably know how to pronounce King Kamehameha (Kuh- may'-uh-may'-uh). The GPS lady pronounces it "Kah'-muh-hah'-muh-hah"!
Anyway, we headed to 'Anaeho'omalu Bay, or A-Bay as the locals call it. A-Bay Beach is one of the premier places to photograph a Big Island sunset so we thought we would explore it before dinner. It's named for the historic royal fish ponds there and is adjacent to the Marriott Hotel. We took a pleasant walk along the path and the first thing we saw was the cats...yep, cats! Lots of cats, wild cats. They seemed friendly enough, but I kept my distance.
Along with the cats we saw several mongooses sharing the cat's food.
We walked the path
and saw lots of flowers,
birds,
The remains of an ancient temple,
petroglyphs,
some graffiti,
and some fish ponds.
And boy, were the fish jumping! I wish I had a photo but "oh, you gotta be quicker than that!"
After we finished our walk we headed over to the Kings Shops to browse until dinner. We saw everything from beautiful art to Island Lava Candy to Island clothing. It was an interesting place. As our dinner reservation time approached, we headed down to Roy's, our restaurant of choice for the evening. I won't even try to describe our dinner. I'll just let the photos do the talking.
And, as if that weren't enough, we topped it off by sharing a couple of desserts.
Dark Chocolate Soufflé
And (what else?) Pineapple Upside Down Cake.
Now I'm a big fan of chocolate, but I think the pineapple cake was better. We crawled back to the car and headed home for the night after our very long, adventuresome day.
